Lou Hamilton has a robust, physical, sculptural & unfussy approach to paint, surface & texture. She restricts her repertoire to simple but bold squares, stripes & crosses; shapes found in the landscape or in urban streets. She works with vigorous brushstrokes in bright acrylic colours, then calms the whole piece down with finishing layers of oil and wax applied with a palette knife or rubbed in with cloth.

Lou’s key influences have always been Robert Ryman, Sean Scully, Joseph Beuys, Mark Rothko & Anthon Tapies, but her work is resolutely of the world we live in now. She gets her inspiration from peeling layers of old walls and the light, mood, abstract forms of urban, land & seascapes but her underlying concerns are for the environment & the impact we have on it
