Lou tries to capture beauty in imperfection & calm in the chaos whether that be through imagined or found imagery. Sometimes she uses mix media such as plaster, sand, rice paper, fabric and twine.

Lou’s Target series is a study of the simple vessel as viewed from above so that it resembles the symbols on 2nd World War Spitfires & Hurricanes, built and flown to where they needed to be by brave yet unsung women. The texture is scratched by the trail of Lou’s character Brave New Girl as she trails across the surface
Lou creates works on paper using watercolour or gouache to explore abstract landscapes, seascapes or imagined imagery. She enjoys the ephemeral nature of watercolour and the more robust, opaque quality of gouache with the immediacy and smaller scale capacity of working on paper.
Lou Hamilton has a robust, sculptural & unfussy approach to paint, surface & texture. She restricts her repertoire to simple abstract landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes. She works with either acrylic or oil. Or both.
Lou’s key influences have always been Robert Ryman, Sean Scully, Joseph Beuys, Mark Rothko & Anthon Tapies, but her work is resolutely of the world we live in now with her underlying concerns for the environment
